Issues for Newly Elected Tax Collector in Haywood
Trying to find a company willing to bond Haywood County’s newly elected, 21-year-old tax collector turned out to be a challenge and will require additional action by the Haywood County Board of Commissioners at Monday’s board meeting. The Haywood County Board of Commissioners set the bond for Republican newcomer Sebastian Cothran at $1 million, but no company has been willing to take a chance on the UNC-Asheville student who has never owned property, or held a regular job. To secure the bond, by the Monday, Dec. 5, meeting when newly elected county officials are sworn in, the county had to reduce the amount to $250,000 assuming more of the risk. A vote was need to authorize the lowered amount.
