Welfare Check Leads To Arrests for Drugs

Meth Seized at the Stardust Motel on Highway 441.

On July 19, 2021, at approximately 4:00 a.m. the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office was dispatched to the Stardust Motel (9466 US Highway 441 South, Sylva, NC) in reference to a Health and Welfare Check on an individual.

Upon arrival at the motel deputies observed an occupied truck in the parking lot nearby to the room which was believed to be the location for the individual they were attempting to locate for the health and welfare check. When deputies spoke with the driver of the vehicle regarding the investigation into the Health and Welfare Check they smelled an odor of marijuana emanating from the vehicle.

Deputies requested the driver, later identified as Brandon Lee Nalley, step out of the vehicle and began an investigation into possible illegal narcotics being used by Nalley. Subsequently a small amount of suspected methamphetamine, marijuana resin, and drug paraphernalia were located on Nalley. Nalley advised Deputies he was there to see an acquaintance by the name of Kyle, later identified as Jon Kyle Jordan. While Deputies continued the search of the vehicle two males, later identified as Jordan and James John Welch, exited the motel room identified for the welfare check.

Deputies requested for the names of the two individuals coming out of the motel room, and one of them identified himself as Kyle. Continuing the investigation into the Health and Welfare Check deputies asked and received from Jordan and Welch consent to search their motel room to determine the health and welfare of the individual they had come to the motel to find. Once inside the room deputies observed approximately five (5) Kilograms (which was approximately 180 ounces/5,000 grams) of suspected methamphetamine.

The investigation led to the issuance of a search warrant for the motel room and Jordan’s vehicle, which was located in the parking lot of the motel. US Currency in excess of $20,000 was seized from the combined searches arising from the investigation.
