Russ Avenue Project On The Horizon
The much-anticipated $54 million Russ Avenue renovation project in Waynesville is officially underway, aiming to enhance traffic efficiency rather than simply adding more lanes. The comprehensive 1.2-mile construction plan involves strategic turn lanes and the removal of the middle turn lane, all designed to optimize traffic flow. Notably, daytime traffic disruptions are expected to be minimal, with two lanes in both directions remaining open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m., alleviating concerns for local businesses.
Despite the sacrifice of the middle turn lane, the project’s completion is targeted for 2028, with intense construction phases concluding earlier. The anticipated benefits include not only improved traffic safety but also a more aesthetically pleasing avenue. Officials underscored the importance of keeping the project on schedule, recognizing short-term inconveniences while emphasizing the long-term advantages, such as increased safety and reduced wait times.
As the project progresses, detailed construction schedules will be established, ensuring that lane closures are limited to nighttime hours, except for specific phases requiring detours. The overall project cost, including right-of-way acquisition, engineering, and utility relocation, stands at $54 million. The careful planning and execution aim to minimize disruptions for both commuters and local businesses throughout this transformative construction process.
