WCU Appoints New Basketball Coach

Tim Craft

Just days following Justin Gray’s departure to Coastal Carolina, Western Carolina University swiftly appointed Tim Craft as their new head basketball coach. Craft, who previously helmed Gardner-Webb for 11 seasons, was chosen by WCU, situated just a short distance away on U.S. 74.

WCU Athletic Director Alex Gary expressed confidence in Craft, highlighting not only his strategic prowess on the court but also his commitment to player development and welfare. Gratitude was extended to Chancellor Kelli Brown and the WCU Board of Trustees for their support throughout the selection process.

Craft’s tenure at Gardner-Webb was marked by consistent success, with the Bulldogs achieving eight seasons at or above .500, including two 20-win campaigns. His leadership culminated in the 2018-19 season’s triumph in the Big South Conference Tournament, earning Gardner-Webb a spot in the NCAA tournament.

Craft, boasting a record of 188-166 at Gardner-Webb, expressed eagerness to lead Western Carolina to further achievements, emphasizing his dedication to building upon the program’s recent progress. He credited Gary and Brown for their belief in his abilities.

Craft’s coaching journey includes stints as an assistant at Gardner-Webb and Auburn before joining East Carolina, where he contributed to a historic season in 2012-13. His return to Gardner-Webb as head coach in 2013 solidified his reputation as a skilled program builder.

Colleagues and analysts lauded Craft’s appointment, recognizing his track record of success and his ability to connect with players. ESPN’s Paul Biancardi praised Craft’s strategic acumen and his capacity to develop winning game plans.

Originally hailing from Tallahassee, Florida, Craft holds a bachelor’s degree in history and secondary education from the University of Florida. He is married to Jessica Arenas, and together they have four children.

Craft’s appointment signifies Western Carolina’s commitment to continued excellence in basketball, underlining his reputation as an invaluable addition to the program.
