TWASA Lifts Water Notice

A water conservation notice for Jackson County customers has been lifted.

The Tuckaseigee Water and Sewer Authority, or TWSA, ended the advisory Monday, July 28, after water levels in storage facilities returned to normal. The notice was first issued on July 20, asking residents to reduce water use.

Officials clarified the shortage wasn’t caused by low river levels. Instead, changes to riverbanks following Hurricane Helene required new water treatment processes, which temporarily reduced the supply of drinking water in storage tanks.

Upgrades are currently underway at TWSA’s Cullowhee plant to help prevent future shortages. The $4 million project—funded through the American Rescue Plan and federal infrastructure law—was announced by former Governor Roy Cooper two and a half years ago. TWSA Director Daniel Manring says the project is about halfway finished and expected to be complete by January.
