GOP Red Wave In Jackson County

The GOP’s red wave showed up in full force Wednesday morning in Jackson County. Jackson County voters cast ballots in four local contested races, the most closely watched being the race for sheriff, and although vote totals are final but unofficial at this point, GOP candidates led in three of those races. Republican Doug Farmer defeated Democrat Rick Buchanan for sheriff and will be the county’s first GOP sheriff in 96 years. Republicans also lead in two of three races for seats on the Jackson County Board of Commissioners. Democrats claimed the Clerk of Court post, as well as the Register of Deeds spot, which the incumbent held onto.

In the state House…

Mike Clampitt (R-Bryson City) defeated Democrat Al Platt of Brevard. Incumbent Republican Kevin Corbin of Franklin beat out Democrat and Jackson County native Karen McCracken.
