An investigation is currently underway in Haywood County following a reported shooting incident on the afternoon of September 9th.
The Haywood County Sheriff’s Office promptly shared on social media, just after 2 p.m. that Saturday, that law enforcement was on-site in the Lake Junaluska area in response to a reported gunshot wound. In their social media post, authorities assured the community that there was no immediate threat and that they had detained the individual suspected to be the shooter. Specific details about the incident were limited at that time.
Later, at 7:45 p.m., Haywood County officials confirmed the arrest of Christopher McNeely, a 35-year-old resident of Cullowhee. McNeely faces charges including Assault with a Deadly Weapon Resulting in Serious Injury, Damage to Personal Property, and Misdemeanor Child Abuse.
McNeely’s secured bond was set at $750,000. While the precise location in Lake Junaluska was not disclosed, a spokesperson for the sheriff’s office informed News 13 that the incident occurred near Lake Shore Drive. They also urged the public to avoid the area at this time while detectives conduct their investigation.
