Newfound Gap Road Improvements
Improvements are coming to one of the most scenic roads in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park.
A major rehabilitation project begins Monday, July 14, on a seven-mile stretch of Newfound Gap Road, starting at milepost 20.90 and continuing to milepost 27.90 on the North Carolina side of the park.
The project includes repaving the main roadway and six parking areas in the affected section.
Work will take place overnight—from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m.—Sunday night through Friday morning. Single-lane closures will be in place during those hours. The overnight schedule will continue through August 15, with the project expected to wrap up by September 30.
Park officials say the improvements are funded through recreation fees, including parking tags, campground fees, and backcountry permits, along with support from the Federal Lands Transportation Program.
Newfound Gap Road is one of the park’s most traveled routes, with more than 1.5 million vehicles using it each year.
