Lake Junaluska Drained for Annual Maintenance

At present, Lake Junaluska might appear more akin to a muddy terrain than its usual lake self, yet this transformation serves a purpose. Annually, during this period, the water level at Lake Junaluska is intentionally decreased to facilitate various maintenance tasks. Scheduled for Saturday, February 24, this cleanup event welcomes participation from the public.

According to Ken Howle the Executive Director of the Lake, the removal of silt holds crucial importance in preserving the lake’s ecosystem. The sediment extracted finds its way to a designated disposal site at Lake Junaluska, where it can potentially be repurposed as topsoil.

It’s important to note that the lake isn’t entirely drained; there are pockets of water retained specifically for wildlife. Howle mentioned that the expenses incurred for this drawdown are covered by funds allocated from the state budget and through charitable contributions. Plans are underway to conclude the maintenance work and refill the lake by Easter.
