The future of middle school athletics in Jackson County is being debated. The Jackson County Board of Education held a special-called information session recently to address whether Jackson County Public Schools should continue to offer both district level and school-based teams for middle school athletics. The discussion follows challenges to retain coaches for both district and school teams, securing facilities for practice and game locations, as well as finding bus drivers and support staff, officials noted. A final discussion and vote takes place at the regular monthly Board of Education meeting Jan. 24, at Smokey Mountain Elementary. Public comment will accepted.
