Department on Aging Firewood Project
Volunteers from the Department on Aging and Cullowhee United Methodist Church will embark on a mission this Saturday, spreading out across the County with generous donations of oak, hickory, and other hardwoods destined for seniors facing heating challenges.
This initiative is an integral part of Project F.I.R.E., aptly standing for Fuel Intervention for Rural Elderly. Individuals arrive in trucks, load up with firewood, and are provided with directions to deliver and stack it at the homes of seniors who rely on wood as their primary source of warmth,” explains Eddie Wells, the director of the Department on Aging.
Throughout the cold-weather season, these dedicated volunteers anticipate delivering approximately 250-300 loads of firewood to seniors in need. If you or someone you know requires firewood assistance, don’t hesitate to reach out at 586-5494, as requests are welcomed at any time.
