The USGS reports a 5.1 earth quake centered in Sparta, NC occurring around 8:07am Eastern Time on Sunday Morning, August 9th. The quake was felt as far south as Atlanta, GA and Columbia, SC. The earth quakes depth was 3.7km. There were hundreds of reports in Jackson, Haywood, Macon and Swain counties from citizens experiencing shaking. Little to no damage occurred due to the seismic activity. The USGS stated on their social media that the last large magnitude quake of this nature occurred in 1916 and this would be one for the record books.
