Ariana Grande Teases Upcoming Project She’s ‘Very Excited’ About, But Can’t Reveal Yet: ‘It Contains Multitudes’
For the second year in a row, Ariana Grande is gearing up to take her seat at the Golden Globes on Sunday (Jan. 11) as a nominee for best performance by a female actor in a supporting role for her work as Glinda, this time in the Wicked sequel, Wicked: For Good.
And while the Wicked ride has been a wild one for the singer-turned-A-list-actress, she told Variety that she’s already gearing up for the next big thing: a top-secret project she promises will be just as exciting.
After upcoming roles in the 13th season of American Horror Story and the fifth episode of the Meet the Fockers series, Focker-In-Law, Grande teased that there “is something else I’m very excited about down the line. I can’t say much yet, but it’s something that inspires me deeply. It contains multitudes.”
While she didn’t give any details about what specific multitudes she was alluding to, Grande did put a definitive line in the sand about what Arianators can expect when she kicks off her upcoming Eternal Sunshine tour on June 6 at the Oakland Arena in Oakland, Calif. Asked if any new music will drop before she hits the road Grande gave a firm “no.”
Nearly two years on from her 2024 seventh studio LP, Eternal Sunshine, Grande firmly said that “nothing is coming before May. I love them [Arianators] so much, but sometimes I want to ask, ‘Do you think there’s another version of me out there who had time to write an album?’ Not yet — but soon enough.”
Grande also weighed in on what it felt like to watch her Wicked co-star and director get snubbed by two professional organizations during the upcoming awards season. “There aren’t enough flowers on this earth for Jon M. Chu,” she said of the two-part film’s director, who was once again not nominated for a Directors Guild of America honor for his work on the franchise that has raked in more than $1.2 billion to date. “He’s an extraordinary human being and director. This film will be watched for decades to come. He set out to move people, to challenge them, to make them better allies and better humans — and he succeeded.”
She was similarly peeved that Erivo’s “undeniable” work in the films as Elphaba was not fully recognized. Erivo was nominated for a best actress Oscar last year and is up for best actress in a musical or comedy at this year’s Globes, but wasn’t nominated for a Screen Actors Guild Award this year after landing a lead actress nod from the Actor Awards (formerly known as the SAG Awards) last year.
“Cynthia’s performance is the most truthful, vulnerable and fierce Elphaba we’ve seen,” Grande said. “And it will be referenced and adored for generations. That can’t be taken away. That’s why I say every good thing that happens to me belongs to them, too. None of this exists in isolation. We informed each other every single day. Of course, it’s hard — they deserve all the flowers this world can grow.”
