Jackson County Public Schools is proud to announce that it
has been awarded the prestigious Army Junior Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (JROTC)
program, solidifying its commitment to student leadership, character development, and academic
excellence. This program, the first-ever JROTC program in Jackson County, will be housed at
Smoky Mountain High School and serve students at both SMHS and Jackson County Early
College.
The decision to introduce the Army JROTC program reflects our ongoing dedication to
providing comprehensive educational opportunities that prepare students for success in both
academic and real-world settings. The program will offer students a unique blend of academic
instruction, leadership development, and community service opportunities, all under the
guidance of seasoned military instructors. JROTC programs are renowned for their ability to
instill valuable life skills and principles in students, including discipline, teamwork, and
responsibility.
“We are thrilled to bring the Army JROTC program to SMHS in the spring 2025 semester” said
Superintendent, Dr. Dana Ayers. “I have been actively pursuing this for more than a year. The
JROTC program aligns perfectly with my goal to expand opportunities for our high school
students and fill a void in JCPS. Likewise, it is our mission to engage, enlighten, and enrich the
students of Jackson County, equipping them to achieve their personal best as contributing
members of their community. I believe that the JROTC program will empower our students to
excel not only academically but also as responsible citizens and leaders in their communities.”
The benefits of the Army JROTC program extend far beyond the classroom. Participants will
have the opportunity to participate in various extracurricular activities, such as drill competitions,
leadership camps, and community service projects. Furthermore, students who complete the
JROTC program may be eligible for valuable scholarships and leadership opportunities at the
college level, opening doors to higher education or future career pathways in the military or
civilian sectors.
