Tennessee transportation officials have reopened Interstate 40 at the North Carolina–Tennessee state line, earlier than expected following recent flooding and a rockslide that forced its closure on Wednesday, June 18.
Originally projected to reopen by July 3, the highway is now open to one lane in each direction as of 1 p.m. Friday, thanks to quicker-than-anticipated cleanup and repairs.
The closure came after heavy rainfall sent muddy water rushing over the interstate, partially submerging several vehicles, including tractor-trailers. Both Tennessee and North Carolina DOT shared images and videos showing the extent of the flooding.
Initial assessments suggested the road could remain closed for weeks. However, work crews managed to clear debris and restore the damaged roadway ahead of schedule.
