Contractors working on behalf of the N.C. Department of Transportation are scheduled to temporarily close a portion of Interstate 26 West for four nights this week, prompting the implementation of two detours for drivers traveling between Hendersonville and Asheville.
The closure of I-26 East will commence no earlier than 7 p.m. from Monday through Thursday nights, spanning from U.S. 25 Business (Exit 44) to U.S. 64 (Exit 49). Motorists will be directed to take Asheville Highway (U.S. 25 Business) to U.S. 64 West, rejoining I-26 East thereafter. During this time, construction crews will be transitioning traffic onto newly laid concrete from Clear Creek Road to U.S. 64.
To facilitate the detour and accommodate increased traffic volume on the alternate routes, traffic lights along the designated detour paths will be programmed to remain green for longer durations. Both sections of the interstate are expected to reopen by 6 a.m. each day.
These closures are integral to the ongoing I-26 widening projects, each aimed at enhancing safety and reducing travel times along this vital transportation artery. Officials from NCDOT advise drivers to exercise caution, adhere to all posted traffic signage, and maintain alertness when navigating through work zones and detours.
