Hicks Cemetery Fire in Haywood 50% Contained
The U.S. Forest Service continues to manage the Hicks Cemetery Fire in Haywood County, which has now expanded to approximately 50 acres.
The wildfire is producing significant smoke, visible from the recently reopened Interstate 40 in Haywood County. According to the U.S. Forest Service, the fire is located between Forest Road 288 and the Pigeon River, near the Harmon Den exit (Exit 7) on I-40.
Matt Switzer, public affairs specialist for the U.S. Forest Service, stated that containment levels are not yet available. However, crews have successfully bulldozed fire lines along the ridge surrounding the fire, which is currently burning downhill toward the river.
As of March 5th, the fire was 50% contained and has burned 194 acres so far.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation. No additional details are available at this time.
