GSMNP Announces Lottery Dates For Firefly Viewing

The Great Smoky Mountains National Park has released the dates for its highly anticipated annual synchronous firefly viewing and the accompanying reservation lottery.

Each year in late May or early June, the firefly species Photinus carolinus creates a rare natural spectacle by flashing in synchrony. This phenomenon attracts hundreds of visitors eager to witness the display.

This year, the official viewing event will take place near Elkmont from May 29 through June 5. Attendance is limited, with only 960 vehicle reservations available across the eight-night event—120 per night.

Reservations are distributed through a lottery system, in which applicants may select two preferred dates for attendance. Winners are chosen via a randomized computer drawing, and those selected will automatically receive reservations.

There is a non-refundable $1 application fee. If selected, applicants will be charged an additional $29 reservation fee to the same credit or debit card used during registration.

Notification of lottery results will be sent via email by May 13.
