With Interstate 40 reopening, many travelers may be tempted to drive through the Pigeon River Gorge to see the flood damage firsthand. However, officials are discouraging unnecessary trips along the stretch, emphasizing that it remains a hazardous area.
Even before the recent damage, responding to accidents in this section of the interstate was challenging for emergency crews due to its narrow roadways and limited access. The gorge has always been a difficult location for first responders, as there is only one way in and out, making timely assistance more complicated.
Limited Space and Emergency Access
For now, I-40 will have three lanes in most areas: one lane in each direction for travel and an additional lane designated for emergency responders. While this provides a temporary solution, space remains extremely limited, leaving little room for driver error or emergency operations. Any accident or obstruction could significantly delay response times.
A temporary barrier has been placed between the travel lanes, with periodic openings to allow emergency vehicles to turn around. However, these openings are relatively small, and heavy traffic could make it difficult to clear a path for responders. Turning around in certain areas may be a challenge, particularly in high-congestion situations.
Added Risks and Construction Delays
Ongoing construction in the area adds another layer of difficulty. If a serious accident occurs, airlifting an injured person could be problematic, as most areas along the gorge lack sufficient space for a Mountain Area Medical Airlift (MAMA) helicopter to land. In most cases, the injured individual would need to be transported to a more suitable location before being airlifted.

Drivers are encouraged to consider alternate routes and avoid I-40 unless necessary. For those who must travel through the area, officials recommend planning ahead, driving carefully, and maintaining a safe following distance.
Despite taking precautions, accidents remain a risk. Any emergency response will take time due to congestion and limited access points, requiring patience and awareness from all drivers on the road.
