Zimmer Development Company out of Wilmington is building the units across from WCU campus on Killian Road. But the state says it failed to install erosion control measures with sediment running into nearby creeks and eventually into the Tuckasegee River. The company says it put runoff controls in place, but were compromised by torrential rains. The company responded by installing silt fencing, sediment basins, and geotextile silt bags in addition to shoveling dirt away by hand, the state finding the measures satisfactory and approving them. The university says the sediment issue shouldn’t impact the estimated Fall 2020 completion date.
