The Pigeon River in Canton is getting a boat launch. The project, currently in its early stages, is made possible via a grant from Duke Energy’s Water Resources Fund. Of the $10 million Duke distributed for various projects, Canton received $100,000 for the boat launch. Town Manager Jason Burrell said that, in addition to the money from Duke Energy, the town received $30,000 from the Pigeon River Fund for a portion of the engineering fees, meaning Canton’s financial contribution is minimal. While the term “boat launch” is being used to describe the project, Burrell said, once completed, the project will serve as a safer, easier place for canoers, kayakers and tubers to access the river. Burrell said the engineering portion of the project should be complete within the next two to three months, and the boat launch should be available for by next spring.
