The Smoky Mountain High School sports schedule shows nine different events this week. Action gets underway Monday evening when the varsity girls soccer team travels to Tallulah Falls for a 4:30 p.m. match.
On Tuesday The Mustangs Varsity Baseball team is scheduled to play Erwin on Tuesday in Sylva. The first pitch is scheduled for 4:30. WRGC Radio will have that game on the air starting at 4:10 p.m.
On Wednesday the baseball team will host Enka also at 4:30 in a game also scheduled for broadcast starting at 4:30. The softball team will travel to Madison to make up a game rescheduled due to poor weather conditions last week. The Mustangs women’s soccer team will travel to Tuscola for a 6:00 p.m. match. The fourth event Wednesday will the track and field team in a match at WCU at 4:00 p.m. the event is hosted by Franklin.
Thursday the Mustangs golf team will T off at the Waynesville Country Club at 2:00 p.m.
Friday the baseball team will travel to Tuscola. The first pitch is scheduled for 4:30. Plans are for WRGC Radio to broadcast that game. The first pitch for the softball game will be 4:00 also at Waynesville on Friday.
Friday’s baseball game will have an added twist. The Mountaineers new baseball coach is Mitch Whitner who was the coach of the Post 47 American Legion baseball team which made it through a couple of rounds of the state tournament. That team had several players now on the Mustangs team and a couple of players who are suited up for the Mountaineers for the spring baseball season. Several of the players who were part of the Post 47 American Legion team in 2015 are expected to play for the team again in the summer of 2016. According to Legion rules a player who graduated from high school in 2015 can return to the same team he played for in 2015 and must have been born in the year 1997 or 1998. They must not reach the age of 20 during the calendar year.
