Tax Scam

Better Business Bureau Western North Carolina President Norma Messer warns taxpayers to be extra cautious of a tax scam. “They may receive an email that appears to be from the IRS. The IRS never sends emails. The message claims there was a problem with your taxes and its impossible to refund your check to be mailed out unless you click that link and if you do, they access your computer and you never get any money.” The point of the scam is to retrieve private information such as bank statements and social security numbers to commit identity theft.
