Some Areas Of Western North Carolina Experiencing Drought Conditions

After record breaking rainfall in 2018, some areas of Western North Carolina are now experiencing drought conditions, the first such occurrence in close to two years.  The latest drought monitor released Thursday morning shows several counties in the foothills and in the northeastern sections of Western North Carolina now in the “Abnormally Dry” category.  Chris Sharpton, assistant district forester with the North Carolina Forest Service, said the agency has been seeing one to two small brush fires pop up daily, which is abnormal for this time of year. Sharpton said the fire danger is mostly in open areas that experience full sunlight.
