Saturday Sports Roundup

The Western Carolina University Catamount  basketball teams are out of contention in the Southern Conference tournament. The Lady Cats were no match for Chattanooga on Friday going down to defeat  85 to 41. The Lady Cats were held scoreless for about five minutes in the first period and seven minutes in the second while the Lady Moccasins went on a 10 to 0 run in the second.  On Friday the Men’s varsity came to the same end even though the spread was closer a 78 to 72 point loss to the Citadel. The Catamounts enjoyed several leads in the game but could not keep the Bulldogs in the cage.  Samford knocked off the other Southern Conference military school with a 79 to 61 win over Virginia Military. Saturday UNG-G will take on the Citadel at noon, Chattanooga will play Wofford at 2:30, Furman meets Samford at 6:00 this evening and the night cap will feature East Tennessee State University and Mercer at 8:30.

The Lady Moccasins knocked off UNC-G Friday 75 to 53 and have played their way into the championship game on Sunday at 1:00 in Asheville at the US Cellular Center when they face the Mercer Lady Bears. Mercer won over Samford 63 to 52 to get into the Championship game.

In Baseball the East Carolina Pirates scored a run in the ninth to take a 5 to 4 win over the Catamounts in Greenville, NC in the Keith LeClair Classic. The Catamounts will face Appalachian State Saturday at Noon. The loss evened the Catamounts record to 4 and 4 on the season.

The Smoky Mountain High School Mustangs baseball team will be playing in Montreat on Saturday at noon. Their opponent is GCAA.  (?)

On Friday the Mustangs soccer team won over Madison 4 to 1.  Tuscola lost to Roberson 3 to 0.  In Softball Hayesville over Cherokee 13 to 1, and baseball  saw Franklin win over North Buncombe 6 t0 5, Pisgah over Owen 17 to 4, and Hayesville over Cherokee 18 to 3.
