Now there’s even more reason to r-e-s-p-e-c-t Aretha Franklin. The Queen of Soul received an honorary degree from Harvard University, along with former president George H.W. Bush, ex-New York City mayor Michael Bloomberg, and five other luminaries at the school’s spring commencement ceremony Thursday.
Franklin was presented with a Doctor of Arts degree for her lifetime contributions as a music artist. During the event, she belted out a heartfelt and soulful version of “The Star-Spangled Banner,” accompanying herself on piano.
