Thursday was another cold night in Waynesville but the Smoky Mountain High School Mustangs baseball team was hot enough to secure a 6 to 3 win over the Mountaineers. Since it was not a conference game and the Mustangs must face Pisgah on Friday the Mustangs had the opportunity to start their third pitcher in the rotation. Anayiah Younce had a five inning and strong performance for the Mustangs giving up only two runs on five hits, stranded five Tuscola base runners, struck out four and walked two. The Mustangs turned to James Hinson to close the game in the sixth. He surrendered one run on three hits and struck out four. The Mustangs offense erupted in the second inning off Tuscola’s Scout Schulhoffer for five runs off three hits. A walk, a hit batter, and a defensive error helped the Mustangs. The Mountaineers send Cameron Parker to the mound in the second after Schulhoffer could not corral a third out. Parker struck out JD Zimmerman to end the rally and the Mustangs left three runners stranded. The Mustangs struck again in the fifth with a run off a hit, a hit batter, and an error. Jaxon Langston came on in the sixth to close and was effective. He gave up no runs on one hit, and struck out three. The Mustangs improved to 13 and 2 and are nine and one in conference play. They will face conference foe Pisgah on Friday in Canton. The game will be aired live on 540 and 105.7 FM WRGC.
