The Brevard Blue Devils came into Friday night’s game with a 7 and 1 record and 2 and 0 on the conference tied with Pisgah for the conference lead. The defenses dominated play in the first quarter which kept both punting teams busy and ended the quarter scoreless. With a minute twenty nine to play in the first half Mitch Wike picked off a Mitchel Johnson pass and returned it to the four yard line. two plays later Will Frady carried the ball into the end zone and gave the Mustangs a lead they would not relinquish and after the PAT by Yanez the Mustangs led 7 to 0. The Mustangs defense stopped Brevard in three plays and hauled in the punt at their own 35 yard line. The Mustangs responded with four long and successful passes including a touchdown strike to Cody Lominac for their second score. The PAT by Yanez gave the Mustangs a 14 to 0 lead which they held going into the dressing room at the half. Homecoming activities followed and Nyah Huddleston was crowned Homecoming Queen 2018. On the Blue Devils second possession in the third quarter they took the ball at their own 43 and after a fourteen play drive Lucas Brooks found the end zone and the PAT gave Brevard hope with a 14 to 7 score with about two minutes to play in the third quarter. To open the fourth quarter the Mustangs continued a drive that started at their own 29 and ten plays later the ball was in the end zone off a 17 yard pass play to Cody Lominac who grabbed the football out of a crowd in the end zone. The Yanez PAT returned the Mustangs to a 14 point lead 21 to 7 with 524 to play in the game. Brevard took the kick-off and drove to the 28 yard line where Mitchel Johnson was looking to connect with Luke Ellenberger but instead the Mustangs Danner Hill grabbed the ball and sprinted between 98 and a hundred yards for a touchdown. The Yanez kick was good and the Mustangs led 28 to 7. Brevard took the kick at the 35 and three plays later Johnson fired a 35 yard touchdown strike to Breylan Owens to make the score 28 to 14 after the successful PAT. The Blue Devils tried an onside kick the Mustangs recovered with good field position at the 40. The Mustangs James Hinson ran the ball for a first down followed by Will Frady who gave the Mustangs their final first down and kept the football and ran out the clock. The Mustangs will face East Henderson at home next Friday night then in two weeks close the season at Franklin. The Final score was 28 to 14. The Mustangs have won eight of their last ten against Brevard and are now two wins in a row against the Blue Devils.
