With under four minutes expired in the first quarter of the game the Tuscola Mountaineers had marched to the four yard line. Baylee Ewart broke through the defense for the touchdown. Coleman Brooks kicked the Point After Touchdown the score was 7 to 0. Six minutes later Baylee Ewart connected with Sam Messer from the thirty one yard line on a tailback option to give the Mountaineers their second score of the night and Brooks kick was good to make the score 14 to 0. Smoky Mountain responded with a strong march downfield which was capped off with an early second quarter 31 yard completion from James Hinson to Cody Lominac for the Mustangs first score. Cole Lamb PAT kick split the uprights to make it 14 to 7. With time running out in the second quarter the Mustangs were unable to convert a fourth and nine at the Tuscola 42 yard line. The first pass attempt from Hunter Bryson was incomplete but on the next play Bryson played off the screen and connected with Brandon Cullins for a 42 yard touchdown strike. After two plays and 20 seconds Tuscola had a 21 to 7 lead at the half. In the third quarter neither team was able to score. To start the fourth quarter Emitt Baldwin intercepted a Bryson pass at the thirty yard line and returned it for the Mustangs second score of the night. The Point After Touchdown try was partially blocked so the Mustangs settled for a 21 to 13 point game. The Mountaineers were aided by thirty yards in Mustang penalties to start a drive at the Mustangs 47 yard line. Seven plays later Tuscola’s Nick Cole trotted into the end zone for the Mountaineers fourth score. Bryson’s PAT swelled the score to 28 to 13. The Mustangs hopes to make it a one score game ended with an interception by Juan Sanchez which set up the Mountaineers in good field position at midfield inside the Mountaineers Red Zone. Three plays later Ewart raced 34 yards for the fifth Tuscola touchdown. The PAT was good. With 2:47 remaining the score was 35 to 13. The Mustangs took the kickoff and started a scoring march downfield which was capped off with a 35 yard scoring catch by Cole Lamb. Hinson found Lamb again in the end zone for the two point conversion to bring the Mustangs back to within two touchdowns but time was running out. Tuscola ran to plays to run out the clock and celebrate a 35 to 21 point win. The 2017 score was 35 to 22 Tuscola. The Mountaineers have won the last six games played between the two mountain rivals. Tuscola improved to 5 and 1. Smoky Mountain is now 4 and 1 and will travel to Madison next Friday.
