Mustangs Celebrate Their Second Big Win Of The Season

The Smoky Mountain High School Mustangs football team proved their 41 to 0 win over Andrews in the first game of the season Friday August 17th was no fluke with a 56 to 6 win over rival Swain  on Friday Sylva. The 50 point difference in the score was the largest differential in more than six years. The Maroon Devils only score was a 73 yard touchdown pass from Damian Lossiah to Bryce Sain early in the second quarter. Mustang kicker Juan Yanez kept the football away from Maroon Devils top kick-off returner Bryce Sain who entered the game with just below a 30 yard per return average. Late in the fourth quarter Colby Taylor returned a Mustang kickoff thirty yards for the best return of the night for the Maroon Devils. The temporary momentum boost seemed to muster the Maroon Devils for a late game scoring drive but the Mustangs defense immediately quieted the drive with a Baldwin interception. It was Emmitt Baldwin who gave the Mustangs their first score with a 24 yard run with 9:04 to play in the first quarter. Juan Yanez kicked his first of eight points after touchdown.  On the first play in the second quarter Dustin Stephens slipped through the defenders for his first score of the night. A short time later Swain scored on the 73 yard strike from Lossiah to Sain but the try  for the point after was blocked.  The Mustangs took the kickoff and marched downfield to set up for James Hinson to plunge into the end zone with the Mustangs third score of the game. With just under three minutes to play in the half Dustin Stephens crossed the goal line for his second score of the night. The Maroon Devils had no luck on their drive after a bad snap ended up in the hands of Mustangs defender Mitch Wike at the eighteen yard line. Will Frady got the fifth score of the night for the Mustangs on a four yard run. Seconds later Wike stepped in from of a Lossiah pass and hauled in his first interception at the 15 yard line. Hinson called his own number and took the ball into the end zone to push the score to 42 to 6 at the half.  With 4:10 to play in the third quarter Will Frady struck again from three yards out to swell the score to 49 to six after the Yanez Point-After-Touchdown. The Mustangs defense shut down another Maroon Devils drive when Emmitt Baldwin snatched  an interception and returned the ball 30 yards to the Maroon Devils 25. Frady and Hinson ran the ball to the eight and thus setting up an eight yard pass play to Emmitt Baldwin for the final score of the game and a final 56 to 6 point win for the Mustangs.

Next week should give the Maroon Devils their best chance so far this season to get a win when they host North Henderson who lost to East Henderson by a score of 48 to 0. The Mustangs will face a tough North Buncombe Black Hawks team who rolled over Madison 48 to 0.
