Mustangs Baseball Wins Conference Title

The Smoky Mountain High School Mustangs baseball team left no doubt as to which team was the conference champion on Thursday with a 7 to 2 win over the Franklin Panthers. What was expected to be a marquee pitching duel turned out to be the Zebby Matthews Show. Striking out eight and surrendering one walk, two runs, and scattered six hits. Matthews also helped his cause in the fourth inning with a three run shot over the center field fence. This came after Matthews was recuperating from a collision with first baseman James Henson when both were rushing to catch an infield popup. Matthews was incapacitated for a few minutes but was able to continue the game in spectacular fashion. Dawson Karap and James Hinson had two hits for the Mustangs. Matthews only hit of the game was the three run blast. The Panthers started the game with their ace Cody Strain who was pulled after the Zebby Matthews Home run. The Mustangs were able to plate three more runs off the Panthers Bull Pen. The Mustangs left nine runner stranded aided in part to four Panther’s errors.
The win and the Mustangs 18 and 3 record should result in an higher seeding in the brackett and at least a couple of rounds of home games to start the playoffs.
