Mustang’s Baseball Season Comes To A Close

Another Mustangs Sports season comes to the end at the hands season of a Lincoln County team. Mustang fans certainly recall the 2015 basketball playoff game in Winston Salem when Chazz Surrett was given the ball with a second left in the game on a blown call by the officials to win the game 52 to 50. The starters in that game were Brett Baldwin, Damon Ledford, Jayce Wolfe, Spencer Norris and Cal Raleigh. Since then there have been a pair of playoff losses in football to East Lincoln, and North Lincoln last year. In 2016 The Mustangs Baseball team beat East Lincoln 19 to 15 in the second round. Last season the Mustangs beat the Lincolnton team in the second round then lost to North Lincoln in the fourth round. This was the Mustangs first trip to West Lincoln and one that will not be easily forgotten. In the third inning it was ruled a catch when the West Lincoln player crashed into the fence in foul territory then retrieved the ball from the ground. The final play was ruled a 4-6-3 double play when it appeared that Emmitt Baldwin reached the bag before the ball at first on a head first dive. Had Baldwin received the correct call the Mustangs would have added a run across the plate with the tying run on base and the heart of the order coming to the plate. Instead the game ended with a West Lincoln 5 to 2 win and thus bring the Mustangs season to a close. In spite of the game being over the officials tossed several of the Mustangs players who argued the call. The decision had been made the play stood, the game was over, and the Mustangs lost so what was the benefit of the ejection other than fan the emotions of what was already a controversial finish.
