Mustang Bats Heat Up A Cold Night In Canton

After a couple of days of rain the Smoky Mountain High School Mustang baseball team was ready for for baseball… hot or cold. Turned out the temperature was 48 degrees with a strong wind when the game started in Canton on Friday night. Veteran Pitcher Jaxon Reid threw the first pitch for the Black Bears but it was no problem for the Mustangs lead off batter Jacob Frizzell who deposited it in the grass in left field. However Frizzell could get no further than first after the Bears recorded three outs in order. The second inning turned out to be three up and three down, but the Mustangs fortunes changed in the third when the top of the order came up with two outs. Frizzell was ht by a pitch then the Mustangs batters followed that up with hits by Waliezer, Hinson, and Matthews which the Mustangs turned into three runs. They added another run in the fourth then exploded with six runs on seven hits in the fifth aided by three errors by the Pisgah defense. In the sixth the Mustangs added a run but stranded two runners. In the seventh Frizzell was hit by a pitch for the second time but Mason Herbert struck out the next two Mustangs.
Veteran pitcher Zebbie Matthews had a spectacular night for the Mustangs on the mound. He surrendered two runs on four hits through five innings while striking out five. Tyler came in in the sixth to close the game for the Mustangs, but walked the first batter he faced. Devon Cabe came around to score on a double by Zeke Long but the Bears hopes for a come back were soon quieted by the Mustangs defense. The Mustangs defense kept Pisgah off the board in the ninth to celebrate an eleven to three win. They are now 2-0 on the season.
The Mustang JV boys lost 11 to 2.
