Appearing Thursday on WRGC’s Five Forty Focus Program, Jackson County Sherriffs Department Officer Matt Helton reported the number of registered sex offenders in Jackson County now stands at 63. The number normally flucuates by about five people but the number has continued to go up over the past five years. Helton stated that the increase might be the result of better reporting and documentation combined with the percentage of sex offenders in the general population continues to be a consistent number. So as a counties population grows so does the nuymber of sex offenders. Helton recommended that citizens log on to the state sex offender wedsite and pay attention to who might be living in the community and especially when different faces start showing up.
