Improvements of N.C. 107 to Improve Connections To Begin

Jackson County residents and visitors will soon have an easier time travelling between Cullowhee and the Tuckasagee community, thanks to significant road improvements on N.C. 107.

A $34.8 million contract has been awarded to Young & McQueen Grading Company of Burnsville to upgrade a 3.8-mile stretch of the state highway.

The work includes widening the two lanes to meet current safety standards, adding turn lanes and 6-foot-wide paved shoulders, building nine retaining walls, improving drainage, replacing culverts and repaving the surface.

Construction can begin as soon as February 27 and has an expected completion date of March 2020.

This was one of eight road and bridge projects recently awarded by the department, totaling $73.2 million dollars in contracts. The projects were awarded to the lowest qualified bidders, as required by state law.
