Head Start/Early Head Start is now taking applications for pregnant mothers and children ages 0 through 4 in Haywood and Jackson counties for the 2016-17 school year starting this August.
Head Start/Early Head Start provides children from low-income families a chance to be well prepared for kindergarten and offers many other services to pregnant mothers, as well as placement for their infant after birth. Each child receives health, dental and developmental screenings and follow-up as required. And special services are available to children with special needs.
Parents become a part of the program, learning new ways to help their children grow, and are provided with assistance in seeking other needed services. Head Start/Early Head Start promotes school readiness skills by partnering with parents and communities to support children’s school success. If before or after Head Start care is necessary because parents are working or going to school, extended hours are available.
Head Start is a federally funded program, which has been in operation since 1965. Locally, Mountain Projects, Inc. operates the Head Start program. For more information about the program, call 1-866-456-4546.
