Haywood American Legion Post 47 jumped out to to zero lead in the first and for an instant appeared the lead was going to get much larger but Asheville’s Jake Morgan snagged a line drive over the third base bag for the second out then stepped on the bag to double off Trevor Lewis and end the threat with the bases loaded for Post 47. Asheville Post 70 figured out Franklin’s Hayden Price in the second inning and rallied for four runs on five hits and took a 4 to 2 lead. Price surrendered one additional run in the fifth and allowed only two hits in the third through seventh innings. Hayesville’s Dwain Cook pitched the eighth and ninth innings for Post 47 but got a rude welcome by Post 70 to scored three times on three hits in the eighth. Trenton Davis added a solo shot in the ninth to accumulate nine runs and a win for Asheville Post 70. Post 47 did create excitement in the sixth when Smoky Mountain’s Bryce Junaluska and Franklin’s Blake Gibson walked. Tuscola’s Trey Cleary and Smoky Mountain’s Matthew Ridley delivered back to back singles which enabled Post 47 to shave the deficit to 5 to 4 with the bases loaded however a strikeout by Aniyah Younce ended the scoring threat. Asheville Post 70 pitchers struck out seven of the final nine Haywood Post 47 batters they faced. Asheville improved to 2 and 2 on the season while Post 47 opens with an 0-1 start.
Asheville travels to Cherryville this weekend and will likely be short handed since several of their key players are also members of the T C Roberson baseball team which will be playing for the 4 – A state championship this weekend. They will face New Hanover County Friday at 2:00 p.m. at Doak Field at NC State University in the best of three series. Post 47 will be traveling to Burke on Saturday. WRGC will not have the Saturday game on their air.
