On January 6, 2018 at 4:27 a.m. Haywood County 911 Communications received a call regarding a residential structure fire on Westbrook Circle in Clyde.
Clyde Fire Department, Canton Fire Department, North Canton Fire Department, Junaluska Fire Department, Center Pigeon Fire Department, Crabtree Fire Department, Maggie Valley Fire Department, Haywood County Emergency Medical Services, Haywood County Rescue Squad, the Haywood County Fire Marshal and Haywood County Sheriff’s Deputies responded to the fire.
Two adults and two children were in the home at the time of the fire – one of the adults was transported to a local medical facility where they were treated and released.
The fire caused extensive damage to the home.
The origin of the fire is currently being investigated by the Fire Marshal’s office.
Shortly after the house fire was reported to 911, a report of a stolen Nissan truck came into the communications center.
The Nissan truck that was stolen was involved in a single-vehicle crash on Old Clyde Road approximately half a mile from the residential structure fire.
According to the North Carolina State Highway Patrol wreck report, the truck crossed left of center entering a curve at a very high rate of speed. The driver of the truck lost control leaving the road to the left and struck a tree. The driver died at the scene.
Haywood County Sheriff’s Office detectives are continuing their investigation into this incident to determine if the fire and vehicle theft are directly related.
The deceased individual in the wreck has not been identified at this time. Once NCSHP Troopers positively identify the deceased and notify the next of kin, further information will be released by the Haywood County Sheriff’s Office.
