Great Smokies Health Foundation Awards

Great Smokies Health Foundation awarded 27 Grants totaling $99,886.00 to non-profit and governmental agencies in Jackson & Swain Counties from the “2016 Thrift Shop Grant Program”. Grants focused on health, wellness and prevention projects/programs.

Awards were presented at the Great Smokies Health Foundation Thrift Shop, 965 Skyland Drive in Sylva and at the Great Smokies Health Foundation Thrift Shop, 112 Plateau Street in Bryson City. “Awarding the grants at the Thrift Shops gives the grantees an opportunity to see first-hand where the funds they are receiving are raised and meet some of the dedicated volunteers”, says Michele Garashi-Ellick, Executive Director.

The following agencies located in Jackson County that received funding included: AWAKE, Inc., Blue Ridge Mountains Health Project, Center For Domestic Peace, Good Samaritan Clinic of Jackson County, Habitat For Humanity JC, HIGHTS, Jackson County Department on Aging, Jackson County Department of Public Health, Life Challenge of Western North Carolina, Inc., Reach Out and Read Carolinas, Safe Kids Jackson County, Southwestern Child Development Center, Southwestern Community College, Summit Charter School, The Community Table, United Christian Ministries of Jackson County, Vecinos Inc, Western Carolina University & Webster Enterprises.

Agencies located in Swain County that received grant funding: Community Services of Swain Inc., Nantahala Racing Club, Swain County Caring Corner, Swain County Health Department, Swain County Schools & Swain Family Intervention Services, Inc.

The mission of the Great Smokies Health Foundation Thrift Shops is “to raise money to support the health needs of our community by selling, at an affordable price, items donated by and sold to our customers”.  The 2016 Thrift Shop Grant Program is a way to make an impact in the health and wellness of the communities we serve.
