Former Head of Sequoyah Fund Pleads Guilty to Embezzlement

The former head of the Sequoyah Fund in Cherokee has pleaded guilty to embezzling almost $1 million.

Nell Leatherwood faces 50 felony counts in a federal indictment. She faces charges of embezzlement and theft. Her indictment alleges she embezzled about $900,000 from the non-profit small business lender using the Sequoyah Fund credit card for personal expenses. The court records also state that she wrote 47 checks to herself totaling $65,000.

Court records state that Leatherwood, who served as Sequoyah Fund executive director from 2006 until her resignation in November 2013.

Leatherwood is currently free on bond. A sentencing date has not yet been set.
