A small transportation project in Haywood County will help drivers get a grip.
A contractor for the N.C. Department of Transportation will close the U.S. 74 eastbound ramp to Interstate 40 West on Monday night. A crew of pavement experts will place a high-friction surface treatment on the road which will help motorists — especially larger vehicles — maintain a grip on the road.
Truesdell Corporation will close the ramp at 9 p.m. and re-open the ramp by 6 a.m. for three consecutive nights in order to complete the $85,850 project by May 18.
The ramp will remain open during daylight hours, and a detour will be established for overnight travel. The marked detour will instruct drivers to take the ramp to I-40 East and remain on the freeway to Exit 31. Drivers will then cross under the freeway and head west on I-40.
Transportation officials remind motorists to slow down, be aware and obey all posted signs to increase the level of safety for drivers and workers.
